Question 1

What is Millenium RAT?

Accepted Answer

Millenium RAT is a Windows remote-access trojan and information-stealing malware family first publicly analyzed by CYFIRMA in November 2023. Newer 4.x versions were rewritten in native C++ and abuse the Telegram Bot API for command-and-control. Group-IB reported more than 62,000 compromised endpoints across 160+ countries.

Question 2

How does Millenium RAT communicate?

Accepted Answer

Millenium RAT abuses the Telegram Bot API over HTTPS (via libcurl in 4.x) for command-and-control and data exfiltration, blending into normal cloud traffic so it requires little dedicated attacker infrastructure.

Question 3

What versions of Millenium RAT exist?

Accepted Answer

Documented branches are the .NET 2.x series (2.4 and 2.5) and the native C++ 4.x rewrite, which changed how defenders must analyze and detect the malware.

Question 4

Who operates Millenium RAT?

Accepted Answer

The developer alias ShinyEnigma is publicly associated with Millenium RAT development and marketing, and the operational deployment cluster is tracked as Y2K Operators by Group-IB. Identity claims beyond these aliases are unconfirmed.

Question 5

How is Millenium RAT detected?

Accepted Answer

Detection correlates endpoint signals such as AppData execution, a new HKCU Run key and browser-credential access, with network signals like Telegram Bot API traffic from non-browser processes. Hash-only detection is insufficient because configuration padding causes hash variation between builds.
